2010 Steam Show!

FRIDAY - DAY 1

Welcome to the Shenandoah Valley Steam and Gas Engine Association's 2010 Steam Show photo album. Despite record-setting temperatures and humidity,  we had a great turnout of flea marketers, vendors, exhibitors, and visitors.  The Officers, Steam Show Directors, and Members of our Club hope you and your family had a wonderful learning experience visiting our show.  It is our hope the photos on this page will bring back enjoyable memories of your visit so that you will tell others about our family-friendly show and make plans to come back again next year!  Please don't forget to sign our Guest Book!  Thanks for stopping by our website!

It's Friday morning and Exhibitors arrive with their tractors and equipment.  It's DAY 1 of the 2010 SVSGEA "Pageant of Steam" Show!
As you scroll through our "Pageant of Steam" Show photo album, we hope you will find our Show  to be Family-Friendly as well as Educational so that you will make plans to attend our show next year.

Enjoy your visit to our Website!

After unloading their tractors and equipment, exhibitors head for the Steam Show Headquarters and Office to register, sign in, and sign up for the weekend's activities.  The SVSGEA Club Secretary for 2010 is Karen Angus, shown at right and daughter Brittany below.
Let's see .... you've unloaded the tractor and set up your exhibit.....been to the Steam Show Headquarters and registered and signed in.  Now it's time to break in those new walking shoes or boots.  Time to make that first stroll through the park and see what's here this year!
In this day of high-speed computers, digital cameras and video cameras, anyone remember how we used to take pictures and movies?

Check out the old cameras shown at left.  They brought back a lot of memories for some of us.

Ms. Jean Gray, shown at left, runs the Club's T-Shirt and Ball Cap store.
Hungry yet?  Better ease on over to the SVSGEA's Bean Soup tent.  Each year our Bean Soup Crew serves up several large kettle pots of steaming hot white bean soup, cooked with steam from our 1941 Vertical Boiler.
Did we mention the unusually hot weather for this year's show?  With daily temps at the 100-degree mark?

A lot of folks were seen with their very own water and misting bottles, as demonstrated by our Club's very own Janita Giles, shown at left.

We strive to keep our annual "Pageant of Steam" shows educational for all who come to visit.  During a visit to our show, visitors will see first-hand demonstrations of antique and vintage equipment as well as craftsmen demonstrating blacksmithing and other special skills.  Often, our craftsmen will invite visitors to participate in the demonstrations, as seen in the photos below.
Like to camp out?  We have a limited number of camp sites available on-site during our annual show.  Our campsites are on a first-come, first-serve availability.  While some of the sites are in proximity to electrical outlets, most are primitive, meaning no water and no electricity. Anyone wishing info on the availability of the campsites can contact  SVSGEA President Rick Custer via
E-Mail.

How far do our Exhibitors and Visitors travel to visit our annual "Pageant of Steam" show?

Meet Mr. Fred Thompson, shown at right, who drove up from Milton, FL, stopping in Conova, WV to pick up his uncle, Roy Davis, shown in photo below right. Fred brought his scale model Case Steam Engine Tractor.  According to MapQuest, the distance between Berryville, VA and Milton, FL is 909 miles. Not counting the miles through WVA on his trip, Mr. Thompson drove the farthest to visit our 2010 Show.  Thanks for visiting our show, Mr. Thompson!

Getting hot yet?  Need to cool off a bit?  Our Ice Cream, Snow Cone, Ice Tea, and Lemonade vendors did a booming business this year due to the 100-degree temps during our Show.
Educational?  You bet!   Check out the early 1900's Maytag gas-engine-powered washing machine shown at left and below.  Not only do you re-visit the old farming machinery of yesteryear at our show, you can also see old photo and movie cameras and really old washing machines.
With the record-setting temps during our show this year, the owner of this exhibit might well have made lots of money with these tubs of water had he not put soap suds in the water.  It was just WAY TOO HOT for a bubble bath!
And so about mid-morning, the park's public address system breaks down.  What are we going to do!?  We could call the Wichita Lineman but we did better than that.... we called our very own lineman to hang some replacement speakers and wire up a backup system....SVSGEA President Rick Custer. Rick works for Allegheny Power Company in West Virginia.
It's getting to be late afternoon going into early evening.  The tractors are starting to lineup over by the shed..... it's time for the annual Antique Tractor Pull Weigh-In!

Our 2010 Scale Masters are Mike Lanham and Charlie Gray.  All participating tractors must be 1959 model or older and engines CANNOT EXCEED original factory specs.

It is now time for our annual Antique Tractor Pull!  Our pull classes are shown at left.  Shown in the photo below left are Karen Lemley and Amanda Mainhart, our Tractor Pull Registration Crew.
Who says the Shenandoah Valley Steam and Gas Engine Association doesn't keep up-to-date with new hi-tech ideas?
Check out the tent over the pickup truck in the photo at left.  This is Mr. David Bush of Charlestown, WV and he is using a Laser Beam to measure the pulling distance of the tractors. Mr. Bush then radios the distance to Rick Custer in the announcer's tower.

And so brings to an end our annual Friday Night Antique Tractor Pull and with this the end of our first day of the 2010 "Pageant of Steam" show.  However .... tomorrow is Saturday and that starts DAY 2 and Saturdays at our Show begin early!
