 2009 Steam Show Photos

Welcome to our 2009 "Pageant of Steam" Show Photo Page!  If you attended this year's Steam Show, it is our hope that the photos on this page of our website will bring back a fond memory or two for you and your family.  If you were unable to make this year's Steam Show, it is our hope that you will view these photographs and make plans to bring your family to our 2010 Steam Show next July.  The Officers, Directors and Members of the Shenandoah Valley Steam and Gas Engine Association strive to make our annual Steam Show a "family-friendly" weekend that is packed with crafts, displays, and demonstrations of long-past farm machinery and equipment as well a trip back into the past of our nation's trucking industry.  We wish to thank our many flea market vendors and exhibitors, as well as the community support from the Public for making our annual Steam Show the success it has become.

Thanks for coming to our show and thanks for stopping by and visiting our website!

PLEASE!  Don't forget to sign our Guest Book!

NOTE--- You will need Cable, DSL, or any form of high speed Internet Service to watch the video clips on this web page.  Video Clips may take several minutes to download to watch, however, the vintage equipment demonstrations are well worth the wait.

Friday - Day 1

Hello and welcome to our 2009 Steam Show Photo Album!  A visit to our annual "Pageant of Steam" show is educational as well as entertaining.  Entertaining because of the many different kinds of equipment displayed throughout the park and educational by way of demonstrating the many different kinds of early antique vintage farm equipment in order that our youth of today may have an understanding of how life was for our grandparents and great-grandparents, as far back as 80 or 90 years ago!
We strive to make all of our yearly shows "Family-Friendly" and educational for our Youth!
Where can someone go to find the most exotic, weird-looking, hard-to-imagine motorized vehicles?  An annual visit to the SVSGEA Steam Show is where!

Check out Mr. Jack Tweeden of Manassas, VA and his new toy!  At first glance, the Steam Show Photographer thought this just an ordinary baby stroller with fancy wheels --- but oh no!  Talk about a "Customized" Park Stroller for Grown-ups?  Wow-wee!
Mr. Tweeden can be reached at
703-361-3600 for answers to any questions about this unique mode of transportation!
Thanks, Mr. Tweeden!

Crafts and Educational?  How about a regular exhibitor at our annual SVSGEA Steam Show?  Meet Mr. Robert Byrne of Woodstock, VA.  Mr. Byrne has been hand-stringing chairs for nearly 20 years.  Each year, he can be seen demonstrating his art in the Indoor Crafts Building at the upper end of the Park.  AND --- Since Mr. Byrne offers his chairs and items For Sale, visitors can take home one or several of his finished projects to add to their home decor.
Each year, the SVSGEA Annual "Pageant of Steam" Show is extremely fortunate to have some of the most diverse Flea Market Vendors offering a wide variety of items For Sale.  Anything from Tools to Hard-To-Find-Parts for that antique tractor or engine you are restoring to vintage oil and gas cans to dolls, furniture, to wood-burning stoves from way back in the past.  If you can't find something you are looking for at one of our annual Steam Shows, chances are it can't be had.
Ms Barbara Heflin, shown at right with hubby Jeff, is the SVSGEA Flea Market Chairperson.

For information regarding Flea Market and Vendor Booths, call Barbara at:  (540)514-5854-cell.

The SVSGEA Annual "Pageant of Steam" Show welcomes Campers each year on a first-come, first-serve basis.  The Camping facilities at our Show Park are primitive, meaning some sights might have water and some might have electrical hookups.....not all sites have water or electricity and these sites are on first-come, first-serve. For information on available camping sites during our annual Steam Show, contact SVSGEA President Rick Custer via E-Mail or SVSGEA Webmaster Amy Blue.
For Motel accommodations, please check out our "Lodging" page on this website.
Hungry Yet?  Visitors to our Steam Show can find just about anything to curb that appetite in our show park.  However, the SVSGEA members take great pride in cooking up and serving several large pots of steam-cooked Ham and White Beans each year.

Shown below and below right is the 1941 Hamburg Vertical Boiler used to make the steam used to cook these beans.

Shown at left are part of our Steamed Ham and Bean Cooking Crew.  From left to right are:  June Wallizer, Vern Wallizer, George Ireland, and Sue Kirk.

Pictured below is Sandy Luper.

Each of these kettle Pots will hold and cook approximately 20 to 25 pounds of White Beans.

Our Bean Crew will usually cook 2 pots on Friday, 3 Pots on Saturday, and usually 2 full pots on Sunday during our annual Show.

The SVSGEA Saw Mill Crew

Butch Kettlewell, Jerry Ullery, Dennis Clem, and Jay Blue.

During the 3-Day Show, this crew will custom cut and saw several truck loads of timber logs into plank lumber.

Our Saw Mill is usually powered by a Steam-Powered Tractor.

Meet our SVSGEA Secretaries --- yep -- we got TWO Secretaries to keep all of our exhibitor and participant registrations in order.

Robyn and Jane McDonald keep all of the Show's exhibitor forms and records in order.

The Steam Show Photographer was able to get this year's picture of these wonderful ladies actually looking AT the camera and smiling?

And that is Harry McDonald in photo at lower right.

Well, you've spent most of the day checking out the flea market, the vendors, the displays, you've had some Steamed Ham and Beans or perhaps a burger and some fries with an ice cold beverage.  You notice the sun starting to head off in the west.....you look at your watch and it is rapidly approaching 6:00 -- time for the annual Antique Tractor Pull Weigh-In, followed by the Tractor Pull.  The Tractor Pull participants begin lining up their tractors for the weigh-in and engine check.  Participating tractors must be 1959 model or older and the engine RPMs must not exceed the manufacturer's factory settings.
Steam Show Director Charlie Gray using a tachometer to check the actual engine RPMs of this John Deere 70 on the scales.

Charlie Gray checking the IH Farmall manual in the picture below for the factory settings for this Farmall 460 during the weigh-in.

The Sun is going down in the west.  All participating 1959 and older tractors and drivers have been across the scales.  SVSGEA President Rick Custer has climbed the stairs and turned on the PA System.  The Friday Steam Show crowd is filling up the stadium seats.  It is time for the annual SVSGEA Antique Tractor Pull!

Not only is our annual Tractor Pull entertaining, it is educational as well with Rick Custer providing interesting historical commentary about the antique tractors as they make their pull.

Following the Tractor Pull, the lights on the Pull Track were turned down and a fireworks show was provided by one of the Steam Tractors by adding wood shavings to the firebox and watch the sparks fly out the smokestack!

Steam Engine Fireworks Display

The  Tractor Pull is over.  The Fireworks Show provided by one of the Steam Engines has concluded.  The visitors begin to head for the parking lot.

Friday - Day 1 of the 2009 SVSGEA "Pageant of Steam" Show has come to an end.

However --- at precisely 9:00 on Saturday morning, more excitement begins!
